Happy Birthday, Codidact!

It feels like we celebrated Codidact’s first birthday only yesterday and that Codidact was founded just a few days ago, but here we are. Codidact is now officially two years old! [1] Two years ago luap42 set up the Discord server that led to all the discussions that led to this network and the code that runs it.

As it was quite a hassle last time to send physical prizes all around the globe, we are unfortunately not able to do something like last year's contest again this year. However, we’ve thought of something small and fun to celebrate nonetheless.

But first we wanted to share some exciting news: We’re getting much closer to having a bank account. Turns out, trying to get a bank account as an international, decentralised corporation, during COVID19 is exactly as much fun as it sounds. We’re making good progress though and expect to be able to announce it soon.

But now to the fun activities:

Codidact currently has nothing like “badges”, that some other community sites have. While we haven’t exactly figured out how we’re going to do it, we thought we might add some "been-there badges". This means we aren't planning to implement a full-grown badge system rewarding you for doing stuff on our sites, but we’ll implement a system that’ll allow communities to host events or mark other milestones and that can be used for such one-time awards.[2]

But here’s the thing. No one of us is especially great at making graphics. And for Codidact’s second birthday we don’t want okay-ish badges. We don’t want merely good badges. We want awesome badges. So we thought: why not make it a little contest? So that’s what we did.

Here’s how it’s going to work:

From now until the end of October you may propose badge graphics for the following badges (as answers to this post; one badge per post please):

  • “Builder of the first year”
  • “Builder of the second year”

The graphics must be 100x300px in size, so 100px high and 300px wide. You can submit the graphics either as PNGs or as SVGs, whatever suits you better. You must grant us irrevocable permission to use these images as badges on Codidact.

From now until the end of October, you’ll be able to vote on the badge proposals. We’ll recognize the top three voted proposals in each category and we’ll choose one of them depending on which fits best to the badge system we’re developing.

Then, once we have the badge system in place, we’ll retroactively apply these badges to everyone who was active in the first year of Codidact (or the second, respectively).[3] The finalists of the badge contest might get a little bonus badge too.

How does that sound?

But, before you open your graphics editor and get lost in hours of painting, the cake is now available. Take a slice and enjoy: 🎂

  1. Okay to be completely fair, Codidact turned two already on Saturday, but due to the weekend and many of us being quite busy right now, we only got to post this today. ↩︎

  2. As with all our features, this will be heavily customisable per site, so communities could use that feature for very specific stuff that we can’t even imagine right now. ↩︎

  3. Of course, if you'd rather not show these badges on your profile, you'll be able to hide them ↩︎

Yes! I'm really proud of everybody involved -- our community members and leaders (without whom we would be in trouble), the team building the platform, all the people who help us make it better by testing, poking at things, and asking "why?" and other questions. We've been able to do some significant, novel things, like abilities, and I can't wait to see what the next year brings.
