Feature request: direct messages

Why ? It would facilitate some misunderstandings and clarification without the need for a public comment. It would open a path to people being "mentored" in their first 5 question or what amount it takes to determine if more help is needed or if that person has a good grasp of question making.

Moderator note: the question the author would like to ask has changed. None of our close reasons really apply, but please hold off on new answers to give the author a chance to write a new question, and then we can mark this one as superseded by it (with a link).

Question totally changed (1 comment)
Maybe focus your question only on one thing? Do you ask about direct messages or about mentoring? (2 comments)

Please do not drastically change already-answered questions. It makes it hard to understand the answers in their original context. I have restored the first version of the question. It looks like the feedback here helped you realize that what you're really looking for isn't direct messages but a mentoring system. Great! Please ask a new question about that, and we can mark this one as superseded by that one.

Meta discussion should help us all refine our ideas -- that's a good thing. But in applying that refinement, we need to try to avoid being disruptive. It's totally fine to close out one question and ask what you really meant instead, separately. I realize the line might seem fuzzy; small clarification should be edits not new questions, large ones should be new questions, judging might be hard. Feel free to ask for help. Meanwhile, this case is clearly large, hence my edit and this comment.
