Announcing featured links

You might have noticed, that the Hot Posts sidebar widget changed. This is, because we added some new features surrounding it. Most noteably, moderators can now feature links to that bulletin.

This is how featured links will look like:

new bulletin look

Moderators can make changes to the bulletin in the moderator tools (which have also been updated to look as nice as our admin tools... :D).

There are a lot of configuration options, which allow

  1. connecting a featured link with a post,
  2. automatically hiding featured links after some date and
  3. using the bulletin for longer events (multiple days)

moderator edit UI

(FWIW, the images are from a test server, so do not worry about anything).

There are two additional changes to the widget:

  • It's now possible to choose, which categories hot posts are selected from.
  • Also, it's now possible to set a minimum score for hot posts.

If you find any bugs, have any questions or feature requests, please add them as answers to this post.

Thank you for the quick turnaround and the intuitive controls!

  1. I can’t tell if I just used post ID improperly or if that override doesn’t work, but using a name and link to a post works like a charm.
  2. One request I have is that you clarify on "event end date" that it's until but not including that date. (Unless that was in error that it functions like that, in which case here's your bug report.)
  3. "It's now possible to choose, which categories hot posts are selected from. Also, it's now possible to set a minimum score for hot posts." Is this an admin-only feature? I don't see any tools for anything related to hot posts, only featured ones.

re 1: I'll look, what the problem here was. In general, using the option in the Tools menu should work if you want to feature a specific post (and prevents issues with using the wrong post ID). re 2: I'll look into it again, maybe separating "display end" and "event"..., re 3: Yes. It's currently admin-only, but either a Meta request (we'll see them) or a ping in the mod-lounge and we'll fix it.
