We made the avatar a click target, but not the whole box. The reason for the latter is that we want to keep open the option for other clickable things within that box later. One idea we've talked about, for example, is to show a user's top tags (perhaps only when relevant to the current question), and we'd want those to be separately clickable. It's easier to learn patterns than to unlearn them, so we don't want to offer a larger click target and then later change what it does. It's my hope that the avatar is large enough to serve as a target on a phone even with big fingers.
