Let notifications become "read" more easily
Behavior change request:
When I'm notified about some change to a page (comment, answer, edit etc.), and I either:
- Click on the link in the notification, or
- Otherwise come to visit that page, with the relevant change coming into view
I expect that notification to become read. If only the first trigger is implement, I believe that is basically how it works on StackExchange. It will be good enough, I suppose, but I personally prefer both.
You could also make it controllable via preference of course.

I like this idea, and I agree it would be good to have it as a user preference. Some users may prefer to have notifications marked as read only when they click on the link in the notification, so they don't miss a notification if they happen to visit the same page for a different reason.
Opt in preference
I propose that automatically marking as read when the relevant content comes into view be an opt in preference. That is, it will not happen for any user unless they visit their preferences page and switch it on.
