Changing sort order does not reset the page number
There are buttons to change the sort order in various places:
- Search results have "Relevance", "Activity", "Age", "Score".
- Answers to a question have "Score", "Active", "Age".
- A category's question list has "Activity", "Score", "Age", "Random".
Changing to one of these sort orders does not reset the page number being displayed to page 1. This is particularly misleading because in all 3 places the pagination buttons show only at the bottom of the page, so the new page displayed after changing the sort order gives no indication other than the URL that this is not the first page of results. Not all users look at the URL or know how to read it, and not all browsers and devices display the URL (for example, browsing on a phone or full screen on a laptop).
In addition to causing potential confusion, this can also give a poor impression of quality and activity:
- Sorting by score can make it look like the highest scoring post is a much lower score than in reality.
- Sorting by activity can make it look like the most recent activity is much longer ago than in reality.
