FR: Throw an error message when a user attempts to paste an image over 2 MB

Currently, it fails silently and no image is uploaded. I paste via ctrl+V or right-click->paste. I use instance of Brave, on Windows 11 24H2 Pro.

Animated screen recording of the silent failure

Copying an image then pasting with right click and seeing no result

I've now hidden the animation behind a <details> tag. The post author already did this in at least one other post, but perhaps forgot for this post.

That doesn't really solve the problem, since now we don't have enough information to understand the question.

The point is that there is no need for an animation to show the situation. Animations are distracting when you're not trying to watch them, and difficult to get the information from when you are. Animations proceed at the pace they are recorded at. That is not necessarily the pace you need to understand the context and what happens at each step.

Animations should only be used when the live action element is absolutely necessary to cause or illustrate the issue. That is usually not the case, and certainly not in this instance.

Olin Lathrop‭ What's unclear in "FR: Throw an error message when a user attempts to paste an image over 2 MB. Currently, it fails silently."?

Your post only says it "fails", which fails to tell you what does happen. Does it show up in the wrong place? At a different resolution? Nothing happens at all as if you never did the paste? Something else?

Also, how exactly is the "paste" done when this symptom is triggered? Is there a special PASTE button somewhere? Many apps take Ctrl-V to indicate paste something from the clipboard, but I wasn't aware Codidact worked that way. The method of pasting might be relevant. Personally, I've never had a problem inserting an image into a post, but maybe I've never tried whatever your "paste" method is.

Olin Lathrop‭ thanks, added, let me know if still unclear, and feel free to edit.
