User sorting is unclear when sorting by *Reputation* or *Age*

When using the Users search function, sorting by Reputation or Age doesn't seem to have an effect. The order in which users are displayed is unclear - it doesn't seem to be alphabetical, by user ID, reputation, or age.

Unclear sorting

@trichoplax discovered that when entering two or more characters, the results are always sorted alphabetically. By default and when using the Reputation/Age sorting options.

Related bug for the first, and confirmation of the second

The first part of this has been raised previously as User search only finds names which begin with the search term. I haven't marked this post as a duplicate because the bug with the sort buttons has not previously been raised.

I can confirm that I also see the bug with sort order, only after searching:

  • The Users page with no search applied shows the "Reputation" sort button highlighted, and the users correctly sorted by reputation. Clicking on the "Age" sort button appears to correctly sort the user by age.
  • The Users page with search results shows neither the "Reputation" nor "Age" sort button highlighted, and the users sorted alphabetically (lexicographically where non-letters are involved). Clicking either of the sort buttons highlights it, but does not change the sort order.

Thanks for your feedback. I removed the duplicate part.

Thanks - that's helpful.

On looking at your example search results again, I see I was wrong about the results being in alphabetical order, so I tried a few more examples. It now seems like a search for 2 letters gives results in alphabetical order, but a search for 1 letter gives results in some unknown order that I can't guess.

Examples:

trichoplax‭ That's an interesting observation. I chose a single-character search specifically to increase the number of search results.
