Tag updates, including tag hierarchies
We have just pushed some updates related to tags. You will now see a "tags" link in the category bar (next to "posts"), which leads to a searchable list of all tags. Selecting an individual tag takes you to that tag's page, showing its description (if any) and the list of posts in that category with that tag. Users with the privilege can edit those tag descriptions.1
This change also introduces hierarchical tags. A tag can have one or more children, and when you search on a tag you can either search just that tag or also search its children. This gives communities another way to organize content.
You don't need to organize all your tags like this. Do it where it makes sense, where one tag is a specialization of a more-general tag. We expect that most tags on most sites will not have children, but some will. You might want to discuss how you'll use this feature on your site-specific metas.
A tag can have any number of children but only one parent.
As a demonstration, on Writing I've created one child of the technical-writing tag.
This feature was proposed on the Judaism site; you can see more background there. This was also a longstanding request on SE, and its absence led to some cumbersome tag names. We hope that this extra structure helps you manage the many related tags that some of your communities have.

If your community imported data from Stack Exchange, you might also want your tag descriptions. We aren't sure how the license works for content that we can't attribute to authors, and our data-import scripts don't currently handle tag wikis. I've added this to our to-do list to see what we can do, but it'll be a while so you might want to just create new ones here. ↩
