Search box instead of link

I was looking for how to search, and it took a bit, because I was looking for a box to click and type.

A nice feature would be having a box with placeholder text "Search" (and a way to submit) instead of the Search link at the top. See what SE has, or look at the search bar on this page, and put it at the top.

We had a lot of discussion about how to approach this, keeping responsive design in mind, and decided to add the search icon but not move the search bar into the header. I admit that you don't know on hover, when it lights up, whether clicking it will navigate away or give you a pop-out; we have some of each in the top bar. My hope is that people coming here fresh will expect it to offer in-page search, and that it's only those of us who were here for the old way who'll be surprised, once each.
