Draft of previous edit (including edit comment) loaded for new edit

+1
−0

After making an edit to an answer (in this case an answer of my own on Collab) I pressed Edit to make a further edit and the Edit Comment field was populated with the comment of my immediately previous edit. I changed this to describe my current edit and saved. I then pressed Edit to make a third edit and the Edit Comment field was again populated with the comment of my immediately previous edit (this time the comment of my second edit today).

It appears that a draft of the previous edit has been loaded, despite that edit having been already saved. This seems to be the same content (since the final state of the previous edit is identical to the current state of the post) but it means an incorrect Edit Comment is showing, which will be applied to the edit when it is saved if the user does not realise. Since edit comments are optional this seems likely to happen in some cases.

Pressing Cancel and then pressing Edit again resulted in an empty Edit Comment field. It seems that pressing Cancel discards the draft, but saving the edit does not (at least in the 2 examples of editing this particular answer today).

A comment from RokeJulianLockhart mentions a very similar Firefox issue Entering the GitHub and GitLab source markup editors displays cached content, so if anyone else experiences this (or the linked similar problem with posting new answers) it would be useful to know what browser and operating system you were using, to narrow down whether this might be the same underlying problem.

Browser Cache Mismatch? (4 comments)
Browser Cache Mismatch?

Could it be a cache mismatch in your browser, somewhat like bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1937425?

Thanks very much for mentioning this. I was indeed using Firefox, so I've edited to mention this, and to mention your link.

I've just seen confirmation of this happening on Chrome too, so the Codidact problem is unlikely to be Firefox related. I don't know how that affects the Mozilla bug.

trichoplax‭, it affected me a lot more when using less powerful hardware configurations and lots of extensions, so perhaps try a clean profile.

I suppose that that's the better outcome, since it means you've nothing to do on your end.
