How to send message to mod other than by flag?

Is there a way to send a message to a moderator without raising a flag? If yes, please explain. If no, consider this a feature request.

I tried to send a message to a mod about a question that got deleted, so there was no way for me to do that with a flag. I ended up flagging an unrelated post and explained in the flag description, but that seemed rather klunky and like a misuse of the system.

What's the right way to do this?

Awkward workaround is acceptable until this feature is implemented

You are correct, there is not yet a better way to contact a moderator than the awkward workaround you mentioned (flagging an unrelated post). To be clear:

  1. A better method to get a moderator's attention should exist, so this will be considered a feature request (feel free to add that tag to the question).
  2. In the meantime, although that workaround is awkward, you should feel free to use it. Flagging an unrelated post will not in itself be considered misuse.

I'm not a moderator myself - any moderators who disagree please object. I'll take the lack of objections on this answer as more meaningful than any upvotes.

what about discord? (3 comments)
what about discord?

There is also discord as the temporary chat solution. Would it be reasonable to expect moderators to be reachable via the discord channel?

The difference between Discord and a built in "contact a moderator" button is that on Discord you would be sending a direct message to a specific person who you know is a moderator, whereas the built in button would put you in touch with whichever moderator responds first. On Discord you would know which moderator you are chatting with. The built in way, you would only know that you are chatting to a moderator, not which one.

This would be aligned with the way moderator flags are currently handled - you don't see which moderator handled it.
