Assessing the 5 tag limit

+5
−1

We currently have a limit of 5 tags per question.

Should we keep this the same or would any changes be of benefit?

For example:

  • Should the limit be higher or lower?
  • Should there be different limits for different contexts:
    • Different communities?
    • Different categories?
    • Different post types?
  • Is there a need for a limit?

I think this also depends on the community, so I suggest changing the limit at the community level instead of having a limit across all the Codidact communities.

For the specific case of Software Development, the five-tag limit seems to work fine. If we aim to have meaningful tags as shown by Lundin in this post, having a rather low tag limit is actually useful because we want to avoid:

  • generic tags
  • tags about the question content
  • company names in tags

Tag naming vs number of tags (1 comment)
A tag limit is not the best means to prevent these problems; it even risks being counter-productive. (1 comment)

I'm not entirely convinced that a limit on the number of tags, is the best way to counter these problems. Generic tags, as well as company name tags, shouldn't exist in the first place, and they can still be created by just omitting other kind of tags. These tags should be deleted and banned once they have been identified.

There is a possibility of ending up in a situation where a user wants to add 10 tags, of which 5 belong to the list of unwanted tags, such as describing the code or content in the question, rather than the topic of the question. By limiting the number of tags, there's a possibility that the user chooses to keep these unwanted tags, and discard the actually useful tags. That leaves us in a situation where fixing the question by editing, becomes harder, than if too many tags were provided.
