Redesign the tag page to provide more clarity about the tag's attributes
Tag wiki pages are currently a bit unclear on a few things. If you possess good knowledge of how that page is built, it's pretty clear to you that if it doesn't list something, it means it doesn't exist. That goes for parents, children and synonyms of the tag. However, that's confusing to anyone without that knowledge. For instance, look at these screenshots of the existing page:
Tag with one child | Tag with one parent | Tag with synonyms |
---|---|---|
If a tag doesn't have a parent, there's no sentence that says so. If there are no children, the link to the list of children is nowhere to be found. If there are no synonyms, that list is also gone, with no mention of it.
The result is meta posts asking if synonyms for a tag exist, or requests to add the already existing list to the tag page.
It would be better if this page mentions all of these attributes even if the tag doesn't have them. I've drafted a visual suggestion of how to accomplish this. It's mostly taking the existing elements and making them visible in all cases, as well as moving them further down on the page, to keep the wiki itself in focus. It also eliminates an unnecessary link to another page listing children. Additionally, I've opted to include a sentence that describes the purpose of synonyms.
I have no requirement that the page has to look exactly like in my suggestion; the most important is that it's clear, provides all necessary information, and maintains enough overview, without flooding the focus area.
My visual suggestions look like this:
Tag with a parent, children and synonyms | Tag with no parent, children or synonyms |
---|---|
Additionally, as is visible in the suggested changes, I've also included one other feature request: Make the tag wiki, synonyms and hierarchy revision history public. That feature request post shows a visual example with multiple revision history links, one for each attribute of the tag: the wiki, usage, synonyms and hierarchy. I've opted for a slightly less noisy option here, by including all of them on the same revision page (I've not suggested a design for that page).
