Welcome to Codidact Meta!

Codidact Meta is the meta-discussion site for the Codidact community network and the Codidact software. Whether you have bug reports or feature requests, support questions or rule discussions that touch the whole network – this is the site for you.

Should a question page have a line above the title?

At the top of the user page there is a row of tabs, such as "Profile", "Activity", and "Vote Summary". These are followed by a horizontal blue line which separates them from the content of each tab. The active tab has a background of the same blue, making it clear what this blue line is for:

The user page on the Profile tab, with the tab background in blue and the same blue extending in a line below all of the tabs

On a question page, a similar blue line extends across the top of the page above the question title, but in this case there is no obvious reason for it to be present:

A question page on desktop showing a horizontal blue line above the question title

This same line is also present on mobile:

A question page on mobile showing a horizontal blue line above the question title

The question title is already visually separated from the category bar above by the change of background colour, so the line does not seem necessary.

This does not take up a large amount of space, so it does not seem important either way, but I personally prefer less visual clutter.

Do you have any preference on whether a question page shows this line above the title?

No, it's a waste of screen estate, and should therefore be removed.

On another note, I would also caution against micromanaging minor design elements like these via Meta, because decisions made on Meta set a precedent, and in many ways tie the rope around future enhancements. The presence of this line is not integral to the functionality, accessibility or overall design of Codidact, like a redesign of vote buttons, fonts, overhauls, etc, would be.

+1 for optimizing screen estate. But I'm ok with OP's question, I don't see it as micromanaging, and... (1 comment)

I would like to see the blue line removed from question pages, and only remain on the user page where it serves a purpose in separating the tab names from the tab content.

On a question page it detracts in the following ways:

  • Leaves less of the question page visible without scrolling.
  • Requires slightly more cognitive processing.
  • Hints at functionality which is not present, due to its use on the user page tabs.
