Flagging spam with existing notices

+5
−0

We now have notices when a post has been flagged as spam. If I encounter a post that has such a notice and I agree, is it

  • Still useful to flag it myself, perhaps as an endorsement, or
  • Unnecessary extra work for the moderators to handle

This question may (or may not) have been touched on in Chat, but I wanted to put it up here for visibility.

Personally I flag as I see fit regardless of what others have previously done or not.

Perhaps the additional flag does nothing as the system is currently set up. Even if so, some time in the future multiple agreeing flags could (and probably should) mean something. For example, enough spam flags could delete the post automatically and maybe ban the user until a moderator can look at the situation.

Flagging and having a moderator mark the flag as helpful also feeds into the abilities system so that you can eventually deal with the issue directly instead of having to flag it. Unfortunately, our ability thresholds are ridiculously high so it won't happen any time soon. Still, each flag is progress, and maybe the ability thresholds will be set more reasonably in the future.

Please go ahead and flag. As another answer points out, this could feed into automatic actions in the future and, in any case, feeds into abilities now (which, yes, also need changes).

When looking at a post with pending flags, moderators can see all of the flags in a single list, so it's not hard to go down the list marking them helpful. Also, if there's anything non-obvious about the situation, the optional comments accompanying flags can be very helpful.
