How does "@username" work in comment threads?

In a comment thread, I can notify someone by including "@username". I also get notified of replies, even if they do not include my username in this way. What determines who is notified of a comment in a thread?

  • When a comment does not include "@username", who is notified?
  • When a comment does include "@username", is that user always notified, or only if they were previously active in the same comment thread / answer / question?
  • If a comment includes "@username" for more than 1 user, are they all notified?
  • Does "@username" only work in comments?

When a comment does not include "@username", who is notified?

People who are subscribed to the thread are notified. Anybody can subscribe. You are automatically subscribed (but can unsubscribe) if you are the author of the post.

When a comment does include "@username", is that user always notified, or only if they were previously active in the same comment thread / answer / question?

A user who has not participated in the thread or post is not pinged. You'll see the user name in red after you post the comment, and a tooltip explains that the user was not pinged.

If a comment includes "@username" for more than 1 user, are they all notified?

Yes, if they are all eligible per the previous answer. (I've just verified this on a dev server.)

Does "@username" only work in comments?

Yes, only comments.
