Welcome to Codidact Meta!

Codidact Meta is the meta-discussion site for the Codidact community network and the Codidact software. Whether you have bug reports or feature requests, support questions or rule discussions that touch the whole network – this is the site for you.

It should be more clear what comment an attribution belongs to

Consider the following screenshot from the middle of a longer comment thread:

Screenshot of part of comment thread

So which text was written by Monica Cellio, the one above or the one below the attribution line? There is no visual cue telling you. Yes, you can figure it out by going to the top or bottom of the thread. Or you may simply know it because you've seen enough comments. Or you may draw an analogy from the fact that for other post types, the name is always below the post … except that way you'll come to the wrong conclusion.

I think there should be a clear visual cue which comment the attribution belongs to. This might be by having a smaller distance to the belonging comment than to the other one. Or it could be a darker line separating the comment from the other's attribution. Or it might be a blurred boundary on the side the attribution belongs to, and a hard boundary to the other comment. Or something entirely different.

I just think currently it's a bit confusing.

I agree that's pretty unclear in threads that are longer than fit in the view. Thanks for raising this.

I don't know what's possible with the current design framework (I'm not very good at front-end frameworks), but if it's possible, what about adjusting the spacing to make the "binding" more clear? For example, this:

original comment thread

could be adjusted like this low-fidelity mockup:

removed whitespace above each comment

Would having less whitespace between the name and the comment than there is between the end of the comment and the next name be clear enough?

I altered a few settings to give some options. None of these are finished but should hopefully give starting points for further discussion of which things to change and how much. The effects are exaggerated for ease of discussion, but could be made more subtle once an approach is settled on.

Current style

A comment thread with the current style

Empty space around each comment

A comment thread with empty space around the username and comment

Border around each comment

A comment thread with empty space and a border around the username and comment

Without redundant internal borders

A comment thread with a border around the username and comment but no borders between

Background colour for separation

A comment thread with a purple background behind the boxes of username and comment

Thanks for doing these. I like the last two (move the borders or use color). I also proposed a whit... (4 comments)

Here's another suggestion, that would be a minimal change (I already mentioned it in a comment, but I guess it is more understandable if you see it). Basically it's changing the in-between lines to black:

Screenshot of my suggestions

This would be a minimal change in the design, but I think it is sufficient.
