@mattbrent, I'm not sure what "this" is in "the challenge with this", but if you're referring to moving the vote balance back to the left then I don't see how it affects height at all. (more) |

Similarly, in the preview there is a button which says "Review answer" or "Review answers". I presume that the intent is to *view* them, but the most salient meaning of "review" here to me is *critique*. (more) |

A: Taking our design to the next level: feedback wanted > Color is used more sparingly in this design, with the eye drawn to unanswered questions and the "ask" button (which is now in line with the list of questions rather than all the way to the right). Actually I find that the thing which draws my eye is the coloured bar indicating the vote balance. ... (more) |

Some questions about office suites fit Power Users, but not all. A separate site which covers office suites (entry-level questions and power user questions) would overlap, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. (more) |

Re "Is there a way to add metadata that readers can use?", as a hack you can add a single-pixel image with alt text, but some screen readers will prefix the alt text with a standard hint that it's image alt text. (more) |

Point 4 is based on a misunderstanding: it's not a description of the site, but of the category Q&A (Meta has different text there). Moving the text into the purple header might clarify the scope, although it wouldn't deal with the point that you really only need to read it once, not every time you v... (more) |

@PeterCooperJr, I think people who want to answer will do non-trivial research if it's a subfield that interests them, so maybe there's a mismatch between the aspects of Christianity which interest the questioners and the answerers. Mathematics and photography seem to be suffering from having people ... (more) |

A: How can we improve community proposals? > A factor to consider is that a community needs a decent flow of (quality) questions to entice people to stick around. I'm not sure how we assess that in advance. After reading the introductory paragraph I was planning to raise this if you didn't. I think it naturally ties into the assessing of i... (more) |

Vote counts broken by the update? The question What good are herbivores in an animal army? currently shows up- and down-votes as +0/-0, and both vote counts have tooltips saying "0.5" when I hover over them in the question. Trap tags with spaces earlier in the post submission process When I type something in the tag box, a list of similarly named tags is produced, along with the actual thing I typed, and I can click to select the tag I want. There is some truth in the observation that people don't always vote for answers based on how well or cleverly they've been optimised for the goal, but this is at best half of a proposal. Votes are not cosmetic: they have a mechanical function. Even if powers aren't unlocked by rep, there will still ... (more) |

"*At least with private votes, they won't know who to target.*" You optimist, you. I've had revenge downvoting on SE when I left a comment pointing out deficiencies in an answer on multiple occasions, including IIRC some where it wasn't me who downvoted the answer. This is why you see quite a lot of ... (more) |

A: Future planning: what user preferences would be useful? With respect to licence types per category: the Photography & Video site default is CC BY-SA 4.0, but the Contests/Critique category within it defaults to CC BY-NC-SA 4.0. On the other hand, Outdoors just uses the site default of CC BY-SA 4.0 for its Photo Contest category. If I had the option to set... (more) |

Editing tags as an extension to editing posts makes some sense, with a possible extension that people with lots of good content in a tag can edit the description of that tag. For tag creation, in a new site I think free-for-all might be the best option; in a mature site, maybe something like having g... (more) |

Separately, one of the lessons I took from SE was that not allowing new users to comment has negative value. Either they have to abuse an answer to leave a comment, or valid critiques get lost because people don't want to (or remember to) come back after gaining rep from answers. IMO it would be bett... I don't understand the linkage between suggested edits and tag creation. Being good at proof-reading and reformatting text is a different skill to categorisation. Worse than that, not being able to create a tag can block someone from being able to post a question, especially in a newish site. (more) |

A: Voluntariness vs. Responsibility, which of them should be considered as a priority for the community team? Working with volunteers is very different to working with paid staff, and if you try to bring the same expectations then you will cause problems. Paid staff have a contract: the hours and type of work expected from them are explicitly stated, as is their compensation. If they don't see the point o... (more) |

A1 is borderline: there is a lot of overlap between applied maths and theoretical physics. A2, A3, B1, B2 are clearly off-topic: the answer would primarily address something other than maths, and what in primary school is called arithmetic isn't "real" maths. (A3 could be heavily rewritten to an on-t... (more) |

@manassehkatz, *specific subfields* of maths have many symbols, but there aren't many which mean the same thing to all mathematicians. The tombstone (a) isn't specific to any subfield; (b) has a connotation not too far from "question answered"; (c) unlike, e.g. the axioms of propositional logic and Z... (more) |

Suggestion: the name "Mathematics" with M in blackboard bold, followed by the tombstone symbol. "Last activity" in question lists appears to ignore new answers Another thing I've noticed on https://outdoors.codidact.com/categories/19 : the question list currently shows the last activity on "2020 - May - Birds" as "last activity 10 days ago by Isaac Moses". @Sigma, I suspect a tag for substitutions in the Q&A would be a better way of structuring that information. Deleted answers appear to be counted in question list Currently https://outdoors.codidact.com/categories/19 lists one question, 2020 - May - Birds, with 12 answers. But if you go into the question, it only lists 11 answers. I'm pretty sure that the discrepancy is due to there being a deleted answer, because I saw a non-bird photo posted and it later dis... I'm interested in a maths site, particularly enumerative combinatorics. But learning a lesson from SE, it would need a clear policy on "problem statement questions" (i.e. effortless homework posts and other questions which appear so to be) from the start and ruthless enforcement. (more) |
