The one with the white lines on blue background looks like a tent, something that might mean "camping spot". I'm not sure what the other icon is supposed to be (a medieval sword shield?), but it certainly doesn't say "moderator" either. A 5-pointed star sheriff badge would be more of a clue, althou... A: Why are comments hidden by default? I agree that it should be easier to see comments than it is, but one difference here from Elsewhere is that we are trying to de-emphasize comments. As Elsewhere has abundantly demonstrated, if you don't reign in comments, they get used as answers, chit chat, and to circumvent closing of questions. ... (more) |

A: Remove "Post" terminology from sites other than META Questions are called "questions", and answers are called "answers". Sometimes you want to refer to such writings generically regardless of whether they are questions, answers, articles, papers, or whatever. "Posts" is the generic term used here, which seems reasonable enough. We need both the sp... (more) |

@sam: That gets back to the problem of us being unable to vote to close. That's really the root of this. The correct response to a vague question is to ask for clarification, then vote to close immediately. That way the proper thing is done (assuming enough others vote to close too) automatically ... A: Downvoting Response Delays I was the downvoter. After I wrote the comment, I noticed that it was actually 3 days since the question was asked, but I decided not to go back and edit it since then the title and body of the comment wouldn't match. (We can only edit bodies not titles). It is frustrating when you try to work w... (more) |

@manas: You're right, we don't know, which is why I was careful to not accuse the OP outright. However, the vast majority of people that complained on SO about being treated with hostility did in fact post crap. From that and the general tone and writing style of the questions, chances are quite hi... (more) |

One problem with the current deletion is that posts are attributed to "Deleted user". The last-used name, or name at the time the post was made should be used instead, but noted that the user doesn't exist anymore. That helps others that might remember the interaction put the post in context, and a... (more) |

A: Make navigation bar optionally fixed at the top When I'm busy reading or writing an answer: I want as much of the window pixels devoted to the task at hand as possible. Don't want to be interrupted by notifications. Modern computers are already way too full of things that try to get my attention regardless of what I'm doing. Let's no... (more) |

A: Is the Codidact community the same as Stack Overflow? Is codidact community as same as stack overflow ? No. Perhaps we are not doing enough to explain this, but that really should have been obvious in my opinion. Codidact is an organization that has created open-source software for Q&A sites, and also hosts a bunch of sites. Stack Overflow (SO) ... (more) |

A: Is copying from other sites OK? Copying posts here from elsewhere can be allowed, but the rules of the other site must be followed. Check the license that applies to the post on the other site. It probably requires attribution unless you are the author. Many sites let the author retain ownership, but you need to check to be su... (more) |

Another point is that while you might not want to be tracked and profiled, that is not in the community's interest. We <i>do</i> want to know who we're talking to in regards to what else they have posted. Put another way, it is useful for members here to be able to mentally profile other users they... (more) |

@#36363 Anyone that takes 2 years (or even a month) to become a positive user isn't worth having around. Most people are quite capable of posting decent questions. Those that aren't are better discarded immediately than wasting volunteer resources on. (more) |

You complain that you can't bang out a question immediately when it pops into your head, even if you're in the middle of doing something else with lots of distractions around. That's a <b>good thing</b>.
We want questions that are well thought out, to the point, and well written. Doing that righ... (more) |

A: Allow posting without logging in at least in some communities Bad idea for lots of reasons: Anonymity breeds vandalism. Enforcement becomes impossible. How would you ban or suspend an offender? Allowing unregistered users to post is an obvious gaping hole for suspended users. Someone who knows there won't be any consequences is more likely to do ba... (more) |

Question | — |
TT tag works in preview, not in final post. The html tag <tt> works correctly in the preview window that is shown while editing a post. Text enclosed in such tags is shown in mono-spaced font. However, the TT tag seems to be ignored when the post is shown normally. The TT tags don't get lost. Editing a post again shows the tags, an... (more) |

A: Hobbling of users who consistently post low-quality content The problem has gotten even worse in the four months since this question was asked. I had forgotten about this question, and posted a new one "Need to throttle users with consistently bad posts". Please consider that an "answer" here. In summary, I looked around on all the sites and found it sur... (more) |

Question | — |
Need to throttle users with consistently bad posts. Now that Codidact has some experience to look back on, we can see the same thing happening here as in other on-line places and in real life. We are all here for our own personal selfish reasons. However, most of us understand what these sites are trying to achieve, and feel it would be wrong to... (more) |

When you give yourself the permission to delete what you don't like, then it squashes the free exchange of ideas. It also too easily devolves into using censorship to delete dissenting opinions because you find them inconvenient.
It's best to only delete or disallow speech or writing when it reac... (more) |

The problem with a rule that content should not be "offensive" is that there is a wide range of what people consider offensive. The easier path is to have a thick skin and realize that what people say in their profile reflects on them, not the site. Saying something insulting about a public figure ... (more) |
