Article Introducing proposals.codidact.com, a new way to add communities to our network
A few weeks ago we asked for feedback on a new way of developing community proposals for our network. Thanks to your feedback we made some adjustments (and also a couple small code changes we realized we needed), and then asked the Webmasters proposal to try it out. We're now ready to make the switc...

Answer A: We need to talk about Abilities
I want moderators to be able to grant or suspend abilities at fairly granular levels, because sometimes that person who's answered a ton of questions well also has a tendency to make noisy edits or leave rude comments, and I want moderators to be able to take the smallest action that addresses a prob...

Comment Post #288402 Staff is just a label; it doesn't carry any special privileges on its own. (Many staff are also mods or admins and get the abilities that way.) We just wanted a way to let folks know who's part of the team.

Answer A: What's happened to Codidact Collab?
We had a still-undiagnosed problem involving (waves hands vaguely, sorry) involving DNS records and/or Cloudflare for our `.org` subdomains, including `collab`. We were able to correct the problem fairly quickly, but it took a while for the change to propagate. We are still investigating the root c...

Comment Post #288399 We had some sort of Cloudflare problem on `.org` earlier; looks like it caused a different problem for the subdomain. I've alerted the right people. Thanks for the report!

Comment Post #288297 And here's [the post explaining what we're doing with the incubator](https://proposals.codidact.com/posts/288366). We're planning to roll this out more generally real soon now, but since y'all already have a bunch of question ideas, I asked Stephen to take an early look.

Comment Post #288278 Attempting to predict the future comes with some uncertainty, but I think there are some important structural differences here, including that Codidact is run by a non-profit organization that has serving the community as a core principle in its incorporation documents. There are no shareholders wit...

Comment Post #288303 Makes sense; thanks for pointing it out. Do you think it's ok to wait until they're done and just change it once here, or is that causing confusion and we should make a shorter-term change and then change it again when the numbers go away?

Comment Post #288278 @#61308 what you say is true on SO (where these things can happen within minutes or even seconds), but there's a different culture here on Codidact. If you look around, you'll see a lot of downvoted questions that are still live. (In fact, we've sometimes gotten complaints that we don't delete stuf...

Comment Post #288194 @#61750, I think you've nailed it. Questions about using ChatGPT are like questions about using Word or Postgres or git etc. If the question fits otherwise in a community's scope, isn't too broad, etc., I don't see a problem.

Comment Post #285576 @#61308 avoiding your last sentence is why I want to explore an incubator idea. The way we're managing proposals right now is not good: sometimes it looks like there's a lot of support and there really is, and sometimes it looks like there's a lot of support and there's not. Unless a community come...

Comment Post #288235 Most of what I know about ActivityPub is in the context of Mastodon, which I (like millions of others) really only became aware of late last year. I know there's a lot more to the Fediverse than Mastodon. Could you say more about how a platform like Codidact could fit into that model? What does fe...

Answer A: No visible response when searching on mobile
The filters widget is now collapsed on the search-results page, like it is for categories. This restores the status quo for small viewports, but I've just noticed while verifying this fix that the "advanced search" block still takes a lot of room on my phone. Should we do anything about that?

This is now fixed. A "copy" button appears in the top right corner of a code block on hover (desktop) or on tap (mobile).

Comment Post #74825 Thanks for letting us know. We did a server migration a while back but we didn't expect any disruptions in old image links. I'm going to ask someone with the right back-end access to look into this.

Answer A: Should we have a network-wide policy against AI-generated answers?
We have posted our default policy for generative-AI content. It's more of a clarification than an actual change; as pointed out in another answer, representing Chat-GPT or any other content that you did not create as yours is plagiarism and was already disallowed. When you use another's material you...

Comment Post #288189 That's what I was thinking too. We want to make it clear there *is* a filter, and if we don't have a name, we can say that.

Comment Post #288189 If you're using a named filter, either one of the built-in ones or one you created and saved yourself, the name shows up there. So this is an issue specifically for ad-hoc filters.

Comment Post #288181 The filter is initially collapsed on the search page, like it is on the category page. It also now appears right above the posts, so the advanced guidance about what you can type into the search textbox is right next to that textbox and the filter widget is next to the posts (like on category lists)...

Comment Post #288181 Oh wait; the filter state doesn't reflect the search; it's the same empty starting point as on the category list. I think expanding it here is unintentional. Search can do things that filters can't, so on reflection, a filter can't be guaranteed to wholly reflect a search query.

Answer A: Mismatch between search guidance, search help page, and search behaviour for votes and score
Thanks for this report. The behavior is powerful; we should update the documentation, not limit search. I've updated the search topic in the help center to describe how the operators actually work and pushed that change to the network. I can do that much without changing code. :-) I've also sub...
